JOHNSON 1,2 / 1 / Department of Zoology, University of Toronto, 25 Harbord Street, Toronto, Ontario M5S 3G5, Canada 2 / Bermuda Biological Station for Research, 17 Zoological Lane, St. George’s, GE 01 Bermuda ABSTRACT Calcinus verrilli (Rathbun, 1901), a hermit crab endemic to Bermuda, is unusual in that it inhabits both gastropod shells ( Cerithium litteratum (Born, 1778)) and gastropod tubes ( Dendropoma irregulare (D’Orbigny, 1842) and Dendropoma annulatus (Daudin, 1800); Vermicularia knorrii (Deshayes, 1843) and Vermicularia spirata (Philippi, 1836)) in nature. Moreover, the majority of shell occupants are male and tube occupants are female. The possible role of gender in shell competition is therefore of interest. Shell competition between males and females inhabiting C . litteratum in the Ž eld was studied in the laboratory. Measurements showed that shield length and major chela length covaried positively for this species. Gender biased allometry favours males in major chela size.
