Case 3135. Scyllarus orientalis Lund, 1793 (currently Thenus orientalis ; Crustacea, Decapoda): proposed designation of a neotype. By P. J. F. Davie, Queensland Museum, P.O. Box 3300, South Brisbane, Queensland 4101, Australia (e-mail: PeterD@qm.qld.gov.au), and T. E. Burton, Zoology Department, University of Queensland, St. Lucia, Queensland 4067, Australia. Abstract: The purpose of this application is to designate a neotype for Thenus orientalis (Lund, 1793), a commercially important shovel-nose lobster (family Scyllaridae). A revisionary study of Thenus Leach, 1815, long considered to be monotypic, has now recognized ve species. All species are morphologically similar and identi cation can be dif cult. A neotype for T. orientalis is needed, as the remaining dry, putative type specimen lacks all legs and mouthparts, making certain identi cation impossible. Species of Thenus are found in shallow coastal waters throughout the tropical Indian and western Paci c regions. The names Thenus and T. orientalis were placed on Of cial Lists in Opinion 519 (August, 1958). The following Opinion was published in the same part of the Bulletin. Copies of this Opinion can be obtained free of charge from the Executive Secretary mentioned above. Opinion 1951. Spherillo Dana, 1852 (Crustacea, Isopoda): Spherillo vitiensis Dana, 1853 designated as the type species.
