This special issue of the ‘Revista de Biología Tropical’ contains papers read during the II. ‘Reunión Internacional de Planctología’ and the IX. meeting of the ‘Sociedad Mexicana de Planctología’, in Merida, Yucatán, Mexico, April 1998. Mexican, Venezuelan, Cuban, American, Spanish, and Indian scientists reported on the results of their studies pertaining to phytoplankton (nine papers of which one in English) and zooplankton (15 papers of which six in English) of Latin-American oceanic and coastal waters. The subjects range from bacterioplankton from cenotes and anchialine caves, via spatio-temporal distribution of phyto- and zooplankton, to photosynthesis of phytoplankton, and to distribution of dino agellates and various zooplankton animals, and also deal with new records of cladocerans, siphonophores, chaetognaths, and descriptions of two new hydromedusae from Mexico. Papers written in Spanish have a (short) English summary, the paper dealing with the new hydromedusae [M. O. Zamponi, E. Suárez-Morales & R. Gasca, “Dos especies nuevas de Irenium (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa, Leptomedusae) en una bahía del Caribe Mexicano”, describing Irenium labiatum sp. nov. and I. alabiatum sp. nov.] presents Spanish and English descriptions of the new species. The book offers an up-to-date overview of contemporary planktological research in waters bordering Latin-American countries, much of that research being done in Mexican institutions. The papers contain interesting reading on a variety of fascinating subjects, though for a full appreciation of the real value of this precious little book a basic knowledge of the Spanish language is required.
