THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOCOMOTORY MECHANISMS IN BUFO REGULARIS by Y. B. ABU GIDEIRI 1) (Department of Zoology, University of Khartoum, Khartoum, Sudan) (With 5 Figures) (Rec. 12-V-1970) INTRODUCTION The first movements executed by the embryos of aquatic animals consist of bending the head to one side. These bends are performed by the contrac- tions of the myotomes situated immediately behind the head. As the embryo advances in age, increasing numbers of caudal myotomes are involved and, ultimately, the animal bends itself into tight coils. This coil may be dextral or sinistral. The muscular contractions and subsequent relaxations become progressively faster. The resulting coils do not produce locomotory move- ments. These are achieved by the development of a flexure which originates just behind the head and progresses caudally, alternating with another flexure passing along the opposite side of the body. In this way, the body is thrown into an S-form. When a series of cephalocaudal flexures is repeated and increases in frequency, it gives rise to locomotion. In the development of Bufo regularis the first type of locomotion is swimming; the second ter- restrial locomotion, or walking. In this work. the mechanism of locomotion has been described from its
