200 parts of Iran, Saudi Arabia and the Emirates bordering the Arabian Gulf. The title is therefore misleading: this is not really a handbook to Middle East herptiles, but to a restricted subsection of them. The book is clearly intended as a practical guide, to be used by a wide variety of people. It is put together in a very user-friendly way, for example the references are listed in three sections "General", "Regional" and "Technical". There are appendices on venomous snakes, treatment of snakebite and techniques of collection and preservation. One feature, however, I think some users will find confusing. This is the use of trinomials, without any comment about whether the authors think they are valid or even if and why they are useful. Confusion is increased by keys which are headed "Key to the species of the genus xxx" and then proceed to key subspecies. R.A. Avery (Bristol) Book Reviews Schmidt, D. (1989): Schlangen. Series 'Vermehrung von Terrarientieren', Urania Verlag, Leipzig. This series, written in the German language, is devoted to the reproduction of amphibians and reptiles in captivity. The four volumes have a general structure in common: a few pages of general facts about the respective group are followed by 15 to 30 pages about terrarium keeping, about 40 pages (70 in Schmidt) about sexual dimorphism, sex determination, periodicity and timing, sexual behaviour, reproduction modes, egg development, rearing of the young and diseases, and about 60 pages exemplifying different species of which a more or less extensive amount of reproduction data is given. Some information on protective legislation and a short bibliography is added. The texts are illustrated by many line drawings and colour photographs of varying quality. Rudloff also includes curves showing seasonal rhythms of different species (light, temperature, reproductive activity). Schmidt gives more useful information on genetics, embryology and diseases than the other authors; Masurat and Grol3e rightfully expand their specific chapter to illustrate the highly diverse reproductive strategies in different anuran groups. Most families (except burrowers like cecilians, amphisbaenians, aniliids, uropeltids, typhlopids and leptotyphlopids, as well as marine turtles) are treated with a number of typical species. These books provide a wealth of valuable information about reproduction of reptiles and amphibians. I can recommend them to any amateur and professional herpetologist who is able to understand written German. U.
