Paradactylodon: a Junior Synonym for Batrachuperus

Paradactylodon: a Junior Synonym for Batrachuperus Paradactylodon: a Junior Synonym for Batrachuperus Stephen M. Reilly1 Department of Zoology, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinos 62901, U.S.A. Batrachuperus gorganensis was described by Clerque-Gazeau and Thorn (1979) from a single specimen collected on the north side of the Elburz Mountains in Iran. This specimen resembles other species of Batrachuperus in general appearance and occur- rence in cold mountain streams. They placed it in the genus Batrachuperus because 1) it has four toes on the hind feet like the other species of Batrachuperus, 2) its vomerine teeth patch configuration is similar to other Batrachuperus, and 3) because it is located geographically between Batrachuperus persicus to the west in Iran and Batrachuperus mustersi to the east in Afghanistan. Recently, Risch (1984) concluded that Batrachuperus gorganensis is not a member of the genus Batrachuperus, but is a new distinct genus and named it Paradactylodon. Unfortunately, there are several problems with Risch's paper that require discussion. A diagnosis is supposed to serve to distinguish the genus from other similar or closely related ones (Mayr, 1969). Risch (1984) diagnoses the new genus as "particular in having four toes like Batrachuperus and Salamandrella and by the shape of its vomero- palatine teeth series http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Amphibia-Reptilia Brill
