Distribution and activity periods of Alsophis rufiventris (Colubridae) on The Quill, St. Eustatius, Netherlands Antilles Aaron Z. Savit 1 , Abigail J. Maley 2 , Heather M. Heinz 3 , Robert W. Henderson 4 , Robert Powell 5 Despite being the most geographically wide- spread colubrid snake genus in the West In- dies (the Bahama Islands to and including Do- minica), we know surprisingly little about the ecology of most species of Alsophis (the ex- ception being A. antiguae ; Daltry et al., 2001). Twelve named species are known from the West Indies (Powell et al., 1996), and five occur in the Lesser Antilles. These five species have his- torical ranges on 16 islands, although Sajdak and Henderson (1991) noted that these ranges have been reduced to only nine small islands. An almost perfect correlation exists between the presence of the introduced mongoose ( Her- pestes javanicus ) and the absence of Alsophis species on islands in their historical ranges (Saj- dak and Henderson, 1991). Some information on diet (Henderson and Sajdak, 1996) and habi- tat (Schwartz and Henderson, 1991) is available for A. rufiventris .
