Most workers have followed our lead in utilizing the generic name Norops Wagler, 1830 (type species by monotypy Anolis auratus Daudin, 1802) for the beta section of Anolis Daudin, 1802 sensu Etheridge (1959) and Williams (1976a). However, a nomenclatural problem exists regarding the precedence of Norops over one available name proposed by Wagler (1830). As we attempted to resolve this issue it became apparent that similar questions of precedence are involved in the anole generic names proposed by Fitzinger (1843). The present paper aims to clarify these nomenclatural matters in the interest of stability.
