The lizard fauna of Italy is certainly one of the most rich and interesting of Europe, and includes also some endemic species. The present book is the Ž rst accurate contribution to the knowledge of the lizards of Italy and of some neighbouring areas (Corsica, Maltese Archipelago, Istria) written in the English language. This book originated from a previous one devoted to the Italian lacertid lizards (1999: I Lacertidi italiani, L’Epos, Palermo, 87 pp.), also written by the same herpetologists. However, the latter book deals with lacertid lizards only (17 species) and was written in Italian, and thus its accessibility for non-Italian herpetologists was very limited. On the other hand, the present book includes 27 saurian species, occurring in Italy, Maltese Archipelago, Corsica and Istria, belonging to Ž ve families: Anguidae (2 species), Chamaeleonidae (1 species), Gekkonidae (4 species), Lacertidae (17 species) and Scincidae (3 species). The family Lacertidae is certainly the best represented, as it includes the highest number of Italian sauria as well as the highest number of endemic http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Amphibia-Reptilia Brill
