THE COMPOSITION AND UNITY OF PHILIPPIANS Some Neglected Literary Factors by DAVID E. GARLAND Tübingen In 1919 Plummer wrote in his commentary on Philippians: There is no reasonable doubt that all four chapters were written as parts of one and the same letter, and in the order in which we have them.' 1 He made this assertion at a time when doubts about the integrity of Philippians had been propounded only infrequently.2 The mind of scholarship on this issue, however, has changed in the course of the years. A crescendo of voices now maintains that there is no reasonable doubt that all four chapters were not written as part of the same letter, nor in the order in which we have them.3 This 1 A.
