Abstract

FOOT WASHING IN THE JOHANNINE COMMUNITY BY HEROLD WEISS Notre Dame, U.S.A. The Johannine account of Jesus washing the disciples' feet while they were alone for supper just before the Passion has been most problematic both for liturgists and exegetes 1). Commentators usually have difficulty deciding what to make of it, and even more difficulty trying to integrate the incident into the Johannine scheme. Improbable as it may seem, the two most recent attempts to define and characterize the Johannine community somehow managed to ignore the foot-washing alltogether 2). There can be no doubt, however, that the Johannine community must have performed this ceremony with some regularity and with a definite purpose in mind. The Forschungsgeschichte of the pericope indicates that until rather recently exegetes basically took sides on the foot-washing as either an act of humility and service or as an act having some sacra- mental significance 3). With the exceptions of O. CULLMANN and J. N. SANDERS 4), most recent commentators see no direct sacra- 1) For the liturgical and iconographic developments of the pedilavium. see Ernst H.
