PAUL TRUDINGER Arlington, Virginia Part of Paul's purpose in the second half of the first chapter of Galatians seems to be to establish his independence of those "who were apostles before him" (i 17). One of the critical problems raised in i ig is the question as to whether Paul is including James, the Lord's brother, amongst the apostles. Fr. JOHN BLiG?i has set out the alternative translations of i ig i). He allows of three possibilities. The first : "I saw none of the other apostles except James", as- sumes the apostleship of James without reserve. This BLIGH rejects and rightly so, I believe. This would certainly be an odd way for Paul to say that he saw only two apostles, Peter and James. Acts i 14 reflects a tradition in which the brothers of the Lord were distinguished from the apostles. The second alternative reads: "I saw none of the other apostles, but only James." here the si fL"1] loses its exceptive force and becomes merely a qualifying con- junction.
