BOOK REVIEW Itala, Das Neue Testament in altlateinischer Überlieferung. Nach den Handschriften herausgegeben von A. JÜLICHER, durchgesehen und zum Druck besorgt von W. MATZKOW und K. ALAND. II Marcus-Evangelium. Zweite verbesserte Auflage. Walter de Gruyter & Co., Berlin 1970. VIII/160 Seiten, gebd. DM 160. Of the four volumes with the text of the Gospels according to the Old- Latin text two have already been published in a definite edition by K. ALAND (Luke in 1954 and John in 1963, see review in this periodical, vol. VII 1964, p. 162). Matthew (1938) and Mark (1940) edited by W'. blnTZ- Kow have been waiting for a thorough revision. This has been done for the Gospel of Mark by K. ALAND and some collaborators. Variant readings in the Old-Latin manuscripts have been given based upon a Latin text composed by J ÜLICHER which has been labelled ltala", but which never existed and the principles of whose reconstruction nobody· y knows. However, textual critics will use this work as a tool to learn the variant readings in the Old-Latin text. And as such it is in its second edition a great improvement compared with the first one. The lacunae, especially y in rl, are clearly indicated. It is now quite evident where a reading, especially in rl, a and b, is still discernable in the manuscript or where we have to rely upon sometimes very ancient collations. It is a pity that with this new edition the first edition, which was very expensive when it appeared in 1940, has become absolutely out of date, The same will obviously happen with part I which we hop= will appear in its second edition before long.
