"THOU ART PETER" BY KENNETH L. CARROLL Southern Methodist University I One of the most debated passages in scripture is the "Thou art Peter" section found in the Gospel of Matthew. It is not to be found in Mark viii 27-30 which is the source for the story in which it is inserted by the author of Matthew. In the Markan original Jesus asked his disciples two questions: "Who do men say I am?" and "Who do you say that I am?" Mark reports that Peter, answering the second question for the group, said only, "You are the Christ" ; then, Mark continues, Jesus "charged them to tell no one about him". The author of Matthew (whether an individual or a "school") expanded Peter's answer to Jesus' second question to the disciples : "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God". At this point Matthew inserted three verses into the account as it was found in Mark : And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I
