Old and New Testament Traces of a Formula of the Judaean Royal Ritual1) OLD AND NEW TESTAMENT TRACES OF A FORMULA OF THE JUDAEAN ROYAL RITUAL1) BY KARL HEINRICH RENGSTORF Various elements of the ancient oriental Royal Ritual 2) have remained alive over a long period of time. Some of them have exercised a varied and highly important influence in the course of the historical development of several Near East religions. This fact, often observed and recalled, for a long time has been one of the established data of research. Moreover, the recent efforts toward a better elucidation of the spiritual and cultural relations between antiquity and Christianity are continually encountering connections which indicate after-effects of certain features in the Royal Ritual. In view of this, it is not surprising that there have been recent attempts to trace influences of this type within the New Testament as well, and with their help to make certain traditions and contexts more intelligible. It is that much less surprising since the concept of sacral kingship, even though in the special form of biblical messianism, plays an important role in the New Testament. In fact, certain early gospel traditions are of such a kind as to require special examination in this respect.
