The Influence o non-canonical Matter About 1949 inquiries about the influence of non-canonical matter on the text was mainly confined to two studies, viz. those of A. J. WE:?sm·cx 1) and M. BLACK 2). Both studies show some disadvantages as a consequence of which their demonstrative force is seriously detracted. WENSINCK based his study on a comparison of D and NB only. The result of this limited number of witnesses was that he overlooked the possibility of many so-called aramaisms being not more than latinisms caused by the influence of d on D. In this case BLACK'S study shows a great advantage. Apart from D, the latin and syriac versions are constantly referred to. In spite of this, BLACK'S studies are based on linguistic considerations only. The question, however, is whether we are dealing with aramaisms or syriasms. As long as the relation between D-old syr-old lat-diat has not been solved it is rather hazardous to base too many con- clusions on semitisms in D. In the last ten years from quite different angles
