Book Notes Continuing Series 1. Hans Dieter Betz et al. (eds.), Religion Past and Present: Encyclopaedia of Theology and Religion 8 Mai-Nas (Leiden: Brill, 2010) cix + 718 pp. ISBN 9004146921 € 249; 9 Nat-Pes (Leiden: Brill, 2011) cix + 750 pp. ISBN 9004146938 € 249. These latest two volumes in the steady publication of this series are to be welcomed. Throughout, we have good translations that bring predominantly German scholarship on a wide range of literary, geographical and social themes as well as moral topics to a greater readership. Sparse illustrations and maps are included. In the current volumes articles relevant to the New Testament include essays on Mark, Matthew and Paul. Entries on Mary, monasticism, mission, martyr, Marcion and Manichaeism may be of especial interest to readers of NovT but general articles (e.g. on orthodoxy, the papacy and natural sciences) and helpful snapshots of religion in a number of countries (here, Mesopotamia, Mongolia, New Zealand and Nigeria, for example) and cities (mostly in Germany) reveal perceptive journalistic insights. Much in the 100 preliminary pages continues to be repeated in each volume, which is extravagant. The volumes encourage serendipitous and casual browsing. By contrast, I do wonder how regularly http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Novum Testamentum Brill
