Brill is to be con- gratulated for making available in English a major resource, previously accessible only to German readers ( Religion in Geschichte und Gegenwart 4 ). Th e scope of Religion Past and Present is therefore familiar, and needs no introduction here; it concerns itself with all aspects of (essentially) the Christian religion, its texts, movements, prominent ecclesiastical and scholarly figures, throughout its two thousand year history. Other religions, ancient and modern, also figure. Th e ecumenical input is welcome, as is its now broad range. An international team of contributors has been recruited, although the greatest number is German. Bibliographies take English language publications into account. Th e intention is that the ten volumes will appear at a rate of two a year, with the final volume, the index, being published in 2010.
