Walter of Burley: His Life and Works JENNIFER OTTMAN & REGA WOOD Walter of Burley was born in 1274-1275, probably at the village of Burley- in-Wharfedale, Yorkshire. 1 His education was long and complete; he was an Oxford Master of Arts by 1301 and a Parisian Master of Theology by 1324. His experience of the world was wide: when studying at Paris, he held a quodlibetal disputation at Toulouse. He entered the service of Edward III in 1327 as an ambassador to the papal court at Avignon, acquiring the title of king’s clerk by the time of a second mission to Avignon in 1330. In about 1333, he joined the circle of Richard de Bury, named in that year to the see of Durham, whose patronage he enjoyed for about ten years. Burley found himself imprisoned for a forestry o V ense in 1336. On his release, he traveled over-seas on the king’s business in 1338-1339, held a quodlibetal disputation in Bologna in 1341, and pre- sented one of his books to Clement VI at Avignon in 1343.
