The Word-Pair ¸Ākal // Kālāhin Jeremiah Xxx 16 SHORT NOTES THE WORD-PAIR ¸ � KAL // K � L � HIN JEREMIAH XXX 16 The textual difficulties created by MT ki?lleivz can adequately be met by repointing it kolinz, the defectively written participle of kalah, "to be consumed, to waste away" 1). This revocalization brings to light the parallel pair 'dkal II kildh, that is also witnessed in Jer. x 25; Lam. iv 11, as well as in Ugaritic 2). Thus the verse may be read and scanned: 3) /??M ?S<9/ "jk,?Iayik_yjl,7kili,; lpekol fdrayik kjl7,-,,i (MT kulldm) basfebi yelekir zv?hdyu ii "sa yik li;, Ue ?issdb 7jvekol bõZeZqyik :Iett?n läbaz Therefore all who devoured you shall be devoured, and all your adversaries consumed. Into captivity shall your despoilers go, and they shall become a spoil; all who pillaged you shall I give for pillage. The proposed reading kol !arqyik kõlïm uncovers a clever word play on kol and kilivl. In the above stichometry the subject of third- colon yelekir is fourth-colon the prophet employing here the rhetorical device that has been labeled "delayed identification" 4). I might add here that the last part of Jer. x 25 containing the parallel pair in question is textually sound and can easily be read as a tricolon: kî ¸ � kelû ¸et ya � aq � b/ wa¸ak � l � hû wayekall � bû/ we¸et n � w � bû h � šmmû, "because they devoured Jacob/ yes, they devoured him and consumed him / and laid waste his habitation". When the first waw in the second colon is parsed as emphatic rather than conjunctive, ¸ak � l � hû need not be considered dittographic, despite Ps. lxxix 7 and the witness of two ancient versions.
