SOME REFLECTIONS ON THE KAI Γ E RECENSION BY SIDNEY JELLICOE Lennoxville, Quebec In common with clothing, household furnishings and many other accompaniments of daily life, scholarship has its fashions, which reflect, in their ever-varying forms and patterns, the changing interests of the times. In the specialized field of LXX studies we have witnessed, for example over the past century, the demise of the long subordination of the cursive to the prestige of the uncial; the challenge (in some circles) to the Lagardian hypothesis; attempts to establish the hand of more than one translator for a particular biblical book; and what is especially relevant to our present inquiry- attempts to discern additional recensions in the course of the trans- mission history of the Old Testament in Greek, such as RAHLFS'S R as the source of the Catena recension and Samuel KRAUSs's Ben La (ana and Ben Tigla 1). The latest of these additions to the Septua- gintal bazaar of fashions is the so-called "Kaige recension" which, as such, began its reign with the publication of Pere Dominique BARTHfLEMY'S Les DevancTers d'Aqitila in 1963.
