107 AMOS VI 1B β : A SUGGESTED SOLUTION The flat, ambiguous words of the last colon of Amos vi 1 are plainly wrong, but until now have received no convincing emen- dation : Woe to those at ease in Zion, to those secure on the mount of Samaria, the pick of the first of the nations, ' and they come to them, (the) house of Israel. Who comes to whom? And is "the house of Israel" to be under- stood as subject of the verb, or as explanatory of the object of the preposition in ldhem, or as vocative? Or should the phrase be con- strued syntactically with the following verse (so the LXX)? No, the words of the last colon do not in any way match the intensity or the parallelism of the strong words of the first three cola of the verse. The text is corrupt, and the error(s) evidently arose before any of the ancient versions were produced, because all of them reflect the MT in one way or another 1). The text is often emended; the favorite suggestion is zveke'lohim (hëmma) bebet yi.crd'el, 'and they are like gods in the house of Israel'
