THE STRUCTURE OF PSALM CXXXIX BY JAN HOLMAN Pamplona, Spain Nowadays it its a platitude to say that the approach of HERMANN GUNKEL to the book of Psalms has initiated a new era in the study of the Psalter. Therefore we feel entitled to begin our survey of opinions from the year in which his commentary on Psalms appeared (1926) 1). Summing up the results of an inquiry of literature on this subject, we find that there are, largely speaking,. three trends in relation to the structure of Ps. cxxxix: a) One group puts forward a structure born out in several strophes. This view is advocated by E. KONIG 2), W. BARNES 3), B. UBACH 4), A. CONDAMIN 5), N. PETERS 6), somehow also by H. HERKENNE 7), J. CALES 8), M. LEPIN 9), E. PANNIER10), M. BUTTENWIESER11), F. NOTSCHER12), B. GEMSER13), E. VOGT14), E. KISSANE15), G. CASTEL- LIN016), E. DHORME"), G. BEHLERI8), A. WEISERI9), Bf°), J. VAN DER PLOEG 21), L. ALONSO SCHOKEL 22). 1) H. GUNKEL, Die Psalmen, Göttingen 1926. 2) E. KÖNIG, Die Psalmen, Gütersloh 1927, 127. 3) W. BARNES, The Psalms, London 1931, 633. 4) B. UBACH, El Psalteri, Montserrat 1932, 253. 5) A.
