An Important Hebrew Bible Manuscript Discovered in the University of Michigan Library

An Important Hebrew Bible Manuscript Discovered in the University of Michigan Library THE MICHIGAN CODEX An Important Hebrew Bible Manuscript Discovered in the University of Michigan Library *. BY ELEAZAR BIRNBAUM Toronto The number of Biblical codices in Hebrew which survive from the final formative period of the Masorah is rather small. When, therefore, a new one of importance comes to light, its finder has the pleasant task of drawing the attention of his colleagues to its existence and reporting on its characteristics. The "final formative period of the Masorah" referred to above may be variously defined. Here it is used for the period preceding the eleventh century. Not all the surviving Hebrew Biblical codices of this time have formal Masoretic notes, and not all of those that have a Masora Parva (MP) have also a Masora Magna (MM). A manu- script that has both may deserve particular attention. After the discovery of the famous Cairo Genizah at the end of the nineteenth century, its contents were dispersed among a number of libraries in Europe and North America. Amongst the huge number of documents and fragments it yielded, there were a considerable number of quite old Biblical MSS, or rather fragments of them 1), with Masoretic notes.
