Chiasmus, the Key To Hosea Xii 3-6

Chiasmus, the Key To Hosea Xii 3-6 CHIASMUS, THE KEY TO HOSEA XII 3-6 BY WILLIAM L. HOLLADAY Beirut, Lebanon Hosea xii 3-6 has called forth many attempts at clarification. Inasmuch as the preexilic prophets offer us only scant reference to the patriarchs, Hosea's summary here of the tradition of Jacob, allusive though it may be, inevitably catches our eye. The text seems to be in relatively good condition; verses 3 and 6 are in themselves clear; but attempts at elucidating the intervening two verses have continued to be unsatisfying, since the whole passage presents a variety of interlocking problems. It may be rendered literally: (3) Yahweh has an indictment against Judah'), and to visit Jacob according to his ways, according to his deeds he requites him. (4) In the womb he supplanted/took-by-the-heel his brother, and in his manhood he strove with God. (5) And he ?strove/ ?ruled ?with an angel and prevailed, he wept and sought favor with him. (?At) Bethel he finds him, and there he speaks with us. (6) Yahweh, the God of hosts, Yahweh is his renown. Beyond any problem of the meaning of specific words, three general and related questions demand an answer. Abstract

CHIASMUS, THE KEY TO HOSEA XII 3-6 BY WILLIAM L. (1) What subject(s) are we to understand
