The Military Elite of King David THE MILITARY ELITE OF KING DAVID BY B. MAZAR Jerusalem, Isr. The complex military and administrative system of King David, which was a decisive factor in the formation of the Hebrew monarchy, included the heroes (haggibb6rim) of David. We have no detailed evidence concerning the original establishment of this military elite, the process of its consolidation, or its particular character. We may, nevertheless, reach illuminating conclusions concerning the various stages in its history as well as its general character. The introduction to the list of David's heroes in the Book of Chroni- cles states, that the chiefs of the heroes held strongly with David, together with all Israel, to make him King (1 Chr. xi 10). The group of David's thirty heroes is already mentioned in sources attributed to the period of David's wandering with his band in the Judean border- lands (1 Chr. xii 19) and to the time when he was a vassal of Achish, prince of Gath, in Ziklag (1 Chr. xii 4).
