ROTH Jabalpur, M.P., India The root nbl and its derivatives require detailed investigation because their connotations in Biblical Hebrew have not always been adequately characterized by the Old Testament Versions, by the traditional translations, and by the dictionaries. In the following an attempt is made to examine this root and to come to some con- clusions concerning its basic meaning in Akkadian and in Classical Hebrew. A The Root nbl (npl) in Akkadian 1) Two occurrences of this root in Old-Akkadian texts are known. 2) The earliest known text is a copy, made by a scribe of the Larsa Dynasty period, of an inscription of King Manishtusu, 3) one of the sons of Sargon of Akkad. 4) A translation of the relevant passage and of the Akkadian phrase in question is given in the following: 5) "Manishtusu, king of Kish, when he plundered Anshan and Sherikhu, launched ships on the lower sea; and 42 governors of cities across the sea assembled for battle, and he conquered, and .... the mountains across the lower sea, - their stones he ....
