217 to ordain true salvation for his servant Martad and give him good tidings thereof". The basic notion underlying the ESA passages where a deity is the subject of the verb, is the utterance of the divine Word of power. The passage quoted from CIS IV. 333 furnishes an absolutely precise parallel to Is. xxvi 12. And in Ps. xxii 16 we might perhaps translate "Thou hast destined me unto the dust of death", in preference to supposing that the Psalmist has described God's action by the homely metaphor of "putting a pot on the fire" ; in other words, the verb would not here be a metaphor from a concrete action at all, but a religious technical term of considerable age describing the exercise of divine power in the ordering of mundane events. It may be suggested therefore that the Massoretic pointing of at least the Isaiah passage (and perhaps that of Ps. xxii 16 also) is in- correct, and that we should read nntv "decree, ordain", a denominative from the noun meaning "lip", to be distinguished as a separate root from not (with initial "put (a thing on something else)".
