Gods com- mand, says Deut. xxx 13, is not beyond the sea, that you should say: O that someone would cross the sea for us and get to know it for us ! Jerem. xxv 22 speaks of the kings of Tyre and Sidon and the kings of the coast-land which is beyond the sea 1). In announcing the approach of the Moabites, Ammonites and Meunites against Jehoshaphat the messengers say: A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea from Edom (2 Chron. xx 2; the sea in this case is of course the Dead Sea). After the defeat of the Arameans under Hadadezer by Joab, David's general, in the campaign against Ammon, "Hadadezer sent and brought the Arameans who were beyond the river" (2 Sam. x 16; does the river mean the Euphra- tes or rather, according to JOH. DE GROOT in Tekst en Uitleg, the Yarmuk?). For distances on land too be'ëber is being used, as e.g. 1 Sam. xiv 1 where
