The Song of the Sea

The Song of the Sea THE SONG OF THE SEA (Exodus XV, 1b-18) BY MARC ROZELAAR Jerusalem I As it is impossible to regard as successful any of the efforts to analyse the form of the Song of the Sea in such a way that a satisfactory interpretation of the contents may be based on it, there seems to be a good reason once more to try and fix the structure of it, in order fo come to a sound judgement of the contents of this song, and, as lar as possible, of the place it takes in the literature of the Bible. Hans SCHMIDT, whose opinion in this matter is considered autho- ritative, tried to approach the song 1) by doing without the opening verse. In this way he could interpret the Song of the Sea as a thanks- giving psalm, the structure of which would be based on the contrast between the personal effusion of an individual saved from distress or illness (v. 2)-followed by a sacrifice to redeem a vow 2)-and a collective reaction to it in the form of a hymn, destined for several choirs, which occupies the rest of the psalm (v. 3-18). .
