What is more natural than to suppose that they marked also their sheep and other animals in an analogous way to distinguish them from those of other cattle-raisers? The meaning of the root nqd fits very well the sense of such a marking. Fifthly, in Arabic naqqad means without doubt "shepherd", the word being a denominative from naqad "a kind of sheep". So we have only the Ugaritic form left. It appears rarely and mostly in such a context that nothing definite can be stated of it. In two pas- sages, it is true, it appears in the unrelated nearness of kbnm "priests". Consequently, it is probable that it had been used in Ugarit of some social class comparable with that of the priests, but nothing more can be stated of it on these grounds. Hankasalmi (Finland) A.
