Chalmers’ thought- provoking monograph focuses on the perceived polemic against El as found in Hosea 11-13. Although the worship of El and YHWH overlapped originally in the northern kingdom, Chalmers argues that this overlapping was challenged in the eighth century. Th e prophet Hosea, standing in the midst of this battle, targeted the equating of YHWH with El, declaring that any act attributed to El was actually carried out by YHWH. Th e fi rst chapter explores the shared traditions of YHWH and El around Bethel. Chalmers argues that, while the existing patriarchal narrative in Genesis 28 has been worked over by the Yahwist, Hosea 11-13 gives us a glimpse into the earlier traditions associating Jacob with El and Bethel. Likewise, although 1 Kings 12 largely refl ects the editing of the Deuteronomist, Chalmers detects traces of an earlier, positive bull cult at Bethel that associated El with the Exodus. Hosea
