<jats:sec><jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Genesis iii 16, which describes the unhappy consequences for Eve of her decision to eat from the forbidden fruit, is one of the most historically and theologically significant verses in the Hebrew Bible. Scholars have long debated certain cruces in the verse, among them the meaning of the phrase. I review various positions on the latter and then offer a new proposal.</jats:p> </jats:sec>
