My Lord, T6kio, May 13, 1895. THE text of the Treaty of Shimonoseki was to-day published . in the official Gazette, accompanied by an Imperial Rescript ex- plaining the course taken by Japan in view of the objections ., offered by cortain of the Great Powers to the permanent occupation of the Liaotung Peninsula. I have the honour to transmit herewith an official translation of the Treaty, and a translation of the Imperial Rescript. I have, &c. (Signed) GERARD LOWTHER. Inclosure 1. Treaty between Claina and Japan, signed at Slzi?nonose7ci, April 17, 1895. ('ranslation.)
