AN ILLUSTRATED BATTLE-ACCOUNT IN THE HISTORY OF THE FORMER HAN DYNASTY1) BY J. J. L. DUYVENDAK One of the most famous exploits of the Former Han Dynasty is the expedition by Kan Yen-shou and Ch'en T'ang jf fl§ into Central-Asia in the 3rd year of the Chien-chao .l1Ø period (B.C. 36). It will be remembered how the Shan-yu of the Hsiung-nu, Chih-chih T, having fled west, had set up a kingdom east of Lake Balkash, had defeated the Wu-sun, who were Chinese allies, and had killed the Chinese envoy Ku Chi (B.C. 43). The Shan-yii had thereupon concluded an alliance with the king of Sogdiana and was invited to settle on the eastern frontier of the kingdom as a protection against the raids of the Wu-sun. The king of Sogdiana sent several thousand camels, donkeys and horses to escort him to his kingdom; during the march however, the Shan-yi's troops met very severe weather and most of them perished. Only the Shan-yii himself with about 3000 survivors reached Sogdiana. However, once settled there, he soon quarelled with the king, built his own fortified capital, raided the Wu-sun and levied tribute even from Ferghana. _ 250 Against this man
