Nécrologie NÉCROLOGIE. Marinus Willem DE VISSER. To 1930, which has been such a black year for Orientalists, Leiden has had to pay toll by the death of its distinguished Japanologue, Dr. M. W. de Visser, who passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 7th. Though he had been suffering for a long time, no one had expected the end. His friends and colleagues share the grief of his widow and only son and mourn the loss of a kindly man and a fine scholar. Marinus Willem de Visser was born on October 2.3rd, 1875, at Stavenisse in the province of Zealand. He received part of his education at Bieda and in 1893 entered the University of Leiden as a student of classical philology. In 1900 he concluded his brilliant student's years by a doctor's thesis, entitled De Graecorccm dizs non refer°entiG?cs specie-rn Shortly befoi-(,, obtaining his degree he spent some time in Berlin, Paris and London for ethnological studies. It was this ethnologic;al interest which soon carried him further afield, for, after completing his classical studies, he took up the study of' Chinese, first under Schlegel, and later under de Groot.
