A Little Drama of Ethnicity: Some Sociological Aspects of the Kelantan Manora* Roger Kershaw University of Kent at Canterbury Introduction It is nearly five years since I presented an earlier paper about the Kelantan Thais to an academic conference in Bangkok (Kershaw 1977) but I still recall the criticism of a Malaysian doctoral student in political science to the effect that the Kelantan Thais are too small a community, at 6,937,' to yield insights and hypotheses relevant to the more typical situations of minority integration (or mal-integration) in South- east Asia where the minorities are much larger and become a focus of inter-ethnic competition, merging into conflict. My critic pointed out that the Kelantan Thais are too few to excite Malay hostility, while a more senior Australian historian wondered whether such small groups of peopfe can be involved in "political crises" as the title of my paper had asserted.
