Th is volume presents nine essays that apply the work of the late French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu to studies of French and Indian societies. Th rough examining diff erent social contexts, in diff erent localities and at diff erent times, the contributions show how Bourdieu’s key concepts and theoretical approaches, including habitus, fi eld, the diff erent forms of capital and symbolic violence, can be used in sociological, anthropological, historical and literary analyses. Prominent themes presented in the volume are power relations, social class, status, privilege and domination. Several authors elaborate upon Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, emphasising that this last- ing cultural disposition, which shapes the categories by which people perceive and act upon the world, is not as unchanging as other commentators on Bourdieu’s work suggested.
