The Golden Compass (2007) and The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (2007) portray rela- tionships between children and animals. What makes these films interesting is that this relationship takes place between real humans (some in fantastic worlds) and imaginary animals. This review examines this trend and asks what it means for our culture that films about human-animal bonds have moved into the realm of the imaginary. The first decade of this century have seen a proliferation of children’s fantasy films in the mainstream. 1 The most successful of these is the Harry Potter series (c. 2001-2011). 2 Like that series, the two films discussed here are drawn from books 3 and attempt to appeal broadly to children and adults.
