Refusing hard disciplinary segregations, this text considers the main questions of musical history—how did melodies develop? how were they used? what effect did they have on their listeners?—within the larger context of liturgical and theological development, commentary, and interpretation.Music and Meaning is, admittedly, almost overwhelming in its level of detail. Over a hundred figures and tables, not to mention seven appendices (two in the book itself, five on the Boydell and Brewer website) compile and analyze information on the three chant genres under consideration, the psalmi and threni of the Old Hispanic Lenten liturgy and the canticles from the Easter Vigil.
