The review is here published in its entirity with apologies to the author. ] Cowper, William. The Centenary Letters . Ed. and intro. Simon Malpas. Manchester, England: Carcanet Press, 2000. Pp. xxi + 162. £12.95 paper. T he year 2000 marks the bicentennial of the death of William Cowper (1731-1800), hence the title of this selection of 117 letters from his voluminous correspondence. Simon Malpas joins a line of distinguished editors of Cowper’s letters, among whom was Sir James George Frazer of The Golden Bough fame, who published an edition in 1912. The “Complete Letters” (numbering over 1,400) can be found in the five volumes of Oxford University Press’s The Letters and Prose Writings of William Cowper (1979-1986). There is much pleasure, however, in owning a pocket book selection of Cowper’s letters.
