Pat Barker, Regeneration , 1992 I R ELIGION I N D ICKENS ’ S N OVELS T he only known sculpture of Charles Dickens is a life-size, seated figure of Dickens pensively gazing down from a chair atop a pedestal, at a life- size figure of Little Nell, the central character in The Old Curiosity Shop (1840-41), who looks admiringly at her maker. The scene was sculpted by an American artist, F. Edwin Elwell, who was commissioned to do the work in Philadelphia in 1891 by a British patron.
