STANTON common element in discussions of Stoicism under the Roman Empire is the close conjunction of the ex-slave Epictetus and the emperor Marcus Aurelius.' The excited comments about their contrasting positions are justifiable if their very different origins and occupations did not in fact result in discernible differences in their thought. But that it is seriously held that Epictetus had an immense influence on the whole philosophy of Marcus Aurelius is shown by Pohlenz: "Der lahme phrygische Sklave und der Herrscher des Welt- reichs - welche Gegensatze ! The pages which follow make it clear that "Lebensauffassung" includes Marcus' view of the universe and man's relationship to it.
