Some Religio-Communal Terms and Concepts in the Qur'Ān

Some Religio-Communal Terms and Concepts in the Qur'Ān SOME RELIGIO-COMMUNAL TERMS AND CONCEPTS IN THE QUR' N BY FREDERICK MATHEWSON DENNY University of Virginia, U.S.A. The most important single religio-communal term in the Qur"dn and in the history of Islam is ummah, "community". In the Qur'dn the term has a variety of meanings and applications, but the most important is its designation of the Muslims as a community in a special sense. This study is a sequel to an earlier article on ummah in the Qur'an. 1) As such it seeks to understand more about the Quran's teaching concerning the Ummah in its definitive sense. In our preparation of this study we have been impressed by the frequent use of religio- communal expressions and concepts, not only in connection with the Muslims but with numerous other groups as well. The most important of these are treated here under the following three heads: first, the important special terms hani f /huna f a' and znillah; second, the names of various groupings, such as muslÍ1nün ("submitters"), mu'nainun ("believers") and cäbidün ("servants") as well as relatively minor terms such as qaum ("people") and (iizb ("party") ; and lastly, the covenant idea, focussing on such terms as mithaq ("covenant") http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Numen Brill
