Some Observations On Dumézil's Theory SOME OBSERVATIONS ON DUMÉZIL'S THEORY (with reference to Prof. Frye's article) BY F. B. J. KUIPER I. The editors of "Numen" have asked for the opinions of other Iranian scholars on the subject briefly but most competently treated by Prof. Frye. However also non-specialists in the field of Iranian philology may find occasion to make some remarks on Frye's article, as only the second part, with his characterization of the various trans- lators of the Avesta and their different outlook on Zarathustra, Frye's own image of Zarathustra, and Gershevitch's recent theories on Zara- thustra's theology and the origin of later Zoroastrianism, deals with Iranian matters. In the first part of the article, however, Frye is concerned with a rather different problem, viz. Dum6zil's theory of a tripartite system underlying the Indo-European mythology. Since it is no doubt primarily on this subject of wider interest, rather than on the present state of Avestan studies, that the editors of "Numen" wish to stimulate a discussion, and since Frye expresses his conviction that "it is the Vedic specialist who must pronounce on the validity of Dum6zil's theory" because the Rigveda is more understandable (and, it may be added, no doubt also http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Numen Brill
