ISBN 978-7-80761-238-4. is book is based on the author’s dissertation and is a most welcome addition to the slim body of scholarship devoted to the study of Chinese Buddhist nuns. Although the order of nuns has enjoyed an unbroken lineage in China since the fi fth century, there are only two collections of their biographies: one is the Biqiuni zhuan 㭼᷀⯤⁛ (Lives of nuns) compiled by (Shi) Baochang ⮞ⓙ in 516 and the other is the Xu Biqiuni zhuan 临㭼᷀⯤⁛ (Continuation of ‘Lives of nuns’) com- piled by the Republican period monk Zhenhua 䛇厗 (1908-47). Liu Yao uses Baochang’s work as a case study in order to examine the broader topic of Buddhist biographical writings from the third to the sixth centuries.
