Although the order of nuns has enjoyed an unbroken lineage in China since the fi fth century, there are only two collections of their biographies: one is the Biqiuni zhuan 㭼᷀⯤⁛ (Lives of nuns) compiled by (Shi) Baochang ⮞ⓙ in 516 and the other is the Xu Biqiuni zhuan 临㭼᷀⯤⁛ (Continuation of ‘Lives of nuns’) com- piled by the Republican period monk Zhenhua 䛇厗 (1908-47). Liu Yao uses Baochang’s work as a case study in order to examine the broader topic of Buddhist biographical writings from the third to the sixth centuries.
