That space is a relevant theme to discuss in relation to Apollonius Rhodius’ Argonautica will not come as a surprise to anyone with any knowledge of this epic: the Argonauts’ quest for the Golden Fleece in the far flung regions of the Black Sea, Northern Africa and much of the Mediterranean evidently covers a lot of space . In fact, since the theme seems so obviously important one might be tempted to believe that everything worth saying about this topic has already been said. This assumption is brilliantly refuted by William Thalmann’s (T.) new book. True, many scholars before T. have focused on space in A., but mostly this has been in the (undeniably relevant) sense of physical geography, especially the extent of scientific knowledge versus mythical and literary tradition respectively in A.’s representation of the journey. 1) In these treatments, the Argonautica was often seen as an epic written in and for the famous Alexandrian Library, and not involved with contemporary issues of a politico-ideological or socio-cultural nature.
