Two issues that have dominated Homeric scholarship in this cen- tury are the oral-formulaic nature of Homeric diction and what is commonly referred to as 'Homeric psychology'. This book has an important contribution to make in both these fields. It is clearly and carefully written. The author's command of his material, of previous work on Homeric psychology, and of modern theory on semantics and oralformulaic composition is admirable. The book's argument is that in Homeric Greek 1) the words xpoc8t'-q, and are indistinguishable in meaning; 2) these words are mostly pleonastically used, that is, they are semantically void; 3) metrical convenience alone decides which of these words is used and in what form. Methodically, J. builds on two principles: all instances of the words concerned in the Iliad, Odyssey, the Homeric Hymns and the epic fragments are investigated, and J. Trier's Wortfeld method is followed strictly, which entails among other things that derivatives (q)pove7tv etc.) are not considered. The first 246 pages of the book deal with the semantics.
