MISCELLANEA PAUL MAAS ON IG II2 2940, 13199 Paul Maas (1880-1964) was a gifted student of Wilamowitz, a leading Hellenist of the twentieth century, and a victim of Hitler's persecution, forced to leave his chair at Konigsberg for asylum at Oxford, where "He paid £60 a year for a miserable room with breakfast, and worked fourteen hours a day"'). The purpose of this note is to rescue from oblivion his restorations of two Attic inscriptions. They are preserved on the margins of his copy of Werner Peek, Attische Inschriften: Nachtrdge und Verbesserungen zu IG. I2. III, AthMitt 67 (1942), 1-229, a book now in my possession. 1. IG II2 2940. 1-2: Kirchner printed: Peek (44) writes: "Nach dem Faksimile finden zwischen PAN und EO bis zu acht Zeichen Platz. Mari wird (vgl. IG. I2 825) oder [`H]PAK [AEI zur Erwagung stellen durfen". Maas has decisively drawn a line through Peek's restorations and writes: HPAKAEEIMANEOH KAN ... In the margin he adds: eXvi9T}XCtv. Of i7c' eL'zuXt'atq Maas notes Ar. Ec. 573 (lyr.)". 2. IG II2 13199.2: Maas rejects Kirchner's [y' EI o], approved by Peek (144), and restores: 6J<iq / [o'uv o].
