This may partly be due to the strong sociological or anthropological colouring of these studies, but at the same time the claims made by some of these studies suggest a wider importance for the literary work than merely sociological. Schein's work does make some use of struc- turalist studies, but it views the Iliad as a work of literature rather than a storehouse of historical or anthropological curiosities. It is generally free from fascinating symbolism adopted by some scholars, which is clad in rather esoteric verbal patterns and fortifies both the converted and the unbeliever in their various convictions. Schein operates in a sensible way and therefore seems to me to have produced an able and stimulating study. However, it seems open to some doubt, if this work will serve as an introduction for those who read the Iliad in translation (p. IX). Judging by the standards of Dutch universities I think that the first two chapters, 'The Poetic Tradition' and 'The Gods', could well serve this purpose,
